Francine Coleman remembers when some people would spray the air with Lysol after a person with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) walked through a room. She also remembers when those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or AIDS were terrified that their families or others would find out and shun them or lock them away. And she recalls when she herself kept her "mouth shut" about having the disease and "would look both ways before going into an agency that served people with HIV and AIDS."

But now, as Coleman sits with three other HIV-positive women while reflecting on the 20th anniversary of AIDS Project Worcester, she speaks without hesitation about the disease she has battled since 1986.
